Dr. Ashok Rajgopal, Dr. Vivek Mittal and Dr. SKS Marya are three senior orthopaedic surgeons that many patients in Delhi NCR look to for joint replacement and complex bone care. There is no official ranking of surgeons in India, so “best” here means experienced, well documented and based at large hospitals. The right surgeon for you depends on your specific joint or bone problem, preferred hospital, location and budget.
This guide answers three common questions: Where do these surgeons practise? What are they known for? And how can you check an orthopaedic surgeon before booking? We checked each profile against hospital pages and news reports in October 2026. Doctor availability, hospital affiliations and consultation details can change, so confirm directly with the hospital before booking.
Quick Answer: Which orthopaedic surgeon should you see in New Delhi?
- Dr. Ashok Rajgopal: knee and hip replacement and arthroscopic surgery. He practises at Medanta in Gurugram, which is in Delhi NCR, not inside New Delhi.
- Dr. Vivek Mittal: hip and knee replacement, including revision surgery, and trauma care. He is at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Pusa Road, New Delhi.
- Dr. SKS Marya: joint replacement and trauma care at Max hospitals in Saket and Gurugram.
- Before you book: check the doctor’s registration, ask for a written plan and consider a second opinion for any major surgery.
How did we choose these three surgeons?
We used public information only: hospital doctor profiles, news reports and professional listings. A doctor made this list if we could confirm four things.
- A current or recent profile on the hospital’s own website or in a news report.
- A senior role in orthopaedics.
- A clear focus on joint replacement or trauma care.
- Qualifications we could cross-check in more than one place.
There is no public data that compares surgical outcomes between doctors in India, so we do not rank them by results. Where two sources disagree, we say so. We did not use patient reviews, because they are easy to fake and hard to verify. No doctor or hospital paid for a place on this list.
Who are the best orthopaedic surgeons in New Delhi at a glance?
These three are senior surgeons with long public track records. The table gives a quick comparison. Details for each doctor follow below.
| Doctor | Hospital (as listed) | Area | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dr. Ashok Rajgopal | Medanta, Gurugram | Gurugram, Haryana | Knee and hip replacement, arthroscopy, robotic surgery |
| Dr. Vivek Mittal | BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital | Pusa Road, New Delhi | Hip and knee replacement, revision surgery, trauma |
| Dr. SKS Marya | Max hospitals, Saket and Gurugram | Saket, New Delhi and Gurugram | Joint replacement, trauma care |
Who is Dr. Ashok Rajgopal and what is he known for?
Dr. Ashok Rajgopal is a senior joint replacement surgeon and the Group Chairman of Orthopaedics at Medanta in Gurugram, according to Medanta’s doctor profile. He received the Padma Shri in 2014.
His listed qualifications include MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics), MCh (Orthopaedics), FRCS and FIMSA. His profile lists knee replacement, hip surgery, arthroscopic ligament surgery and robotic surgery among his areas of work. Medanta also credits him with India’s first bilateral total knee replacement, a surgery on both knees in one go, and with introducing minimally invasive knee replacement.
A note on numbers: hospital profiles often quote very high surgery counts. Figures for Dr. Rajgopal differ between sources, so we have left them out. Ask the hospital what is relevant to your own surgery, such as how often the team does your exact procedure.
He has moved between hospitals during his career, so older web pages may show a different hospital. Always check the current one before you travel.
Who is Dr. Vivek Mittal and what does he treat?
Dr. Vivek Mittal is Senior Director of Orthopaedics at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, as listed on the hospital’s profile page. The hospital sits on Pusa Road, in central-west Delhi.
He did his MBBS at University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi University, and his MS in Orthopaedics, with training at the Central Institute of Orthopaedics, Safdarjung Hospital. His profile also lists an AO trauma fellowship in Innsbruck, Austria, and a joint replacement fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in the USA.
His listed interests include:
- Primary and revision hip and knee replacement.
- Partial knee replacement and minimally invasive knee replacement.
- Osteotomy around the knee, a procedure that realigns the bone to ease pressure on a joint.
- Trauma care for the hip, knee and shoulder.
Check the name carefully. The hospital profile gives his experience in two different ways, as 32 plus years in the header and over 25 years in the text. Ask the hospital for the exact figure if it matters to you. Also make sure you are booking the right doctor at the right hospital, as many online listings share similar names.
Who is Dr. SKS Marya and where does he practise?
Dr. SKS Marya is a joint replacement and trauma surgeon who is Chairman and Chief Surgeon of the Max Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences and Orthopaedics. A BioSpectrum report from December 2019 says he operates at Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital in Saket and at Max Hospital in Gurugram.
The same report says he introduced single-sitting bilateral knee and hip replacement and started half-knee (unicompartmental) replacement in the year 2000. It also lists AO Switzerland faculty membership. A doctor-booking site lists him with MS (Orthopaedics) and DNB qualifications and an OPD at the Saket hospital.
That news report is several years old, so confirm his current hospital and OPD days before you plan a visit.
Do these doctors treat spine problems?
Not as a main focus, going by their official profiles. All three are mainly listed for joint replacement and trauma care. Some older web pages credit one or more of them with spine surgery, but we could not confirm this on hospital pages.
For a spine problem, such as a slipped disc or scoliosis, look for a surgeon who lists spine surgery as a specialty and ask which spine procedures they do most often.
How do you choose the right orthopaedic surgeon?
Match the surgeon to your problem first, then check their credentials and how comfortable you feel. Reputation alone is not enough.
- Match the specialty. A surgeon who mainly does joint replacement may not be the best fit for a sports ligament tear or a hand problem.
- Check registration. Doctors in India must be registered. You can search the Indian Medical Register on the NMC website to confirm a doctor’s registration.
- Ask about your exact procedure. How many do they do each year? What are the usual risks? What other options exist, including non-surgical ones?
- Get a written estimate. Ask what the quote covers, such as the implant, room type, hospital stay, physiotherapy and follow-up visits.
- Take a second opinion for major surgery. A good surgeon will not mind it, and it can confirm that you need surgery at all.
When should you see an orthopaedic surgeon?
See one when bone, joint or muscle pain lasts for weeks, keeps coming back or limits your daily life. A general physician or physiotherapist can often guide you on whether surgery is even needed.
Go to an emergency department, not an OPD, if you have a serious injury with deformity, cannot put weight on a limb, or have a hot, swollen joint along with fever. Sudden numbness or weakness in an arm or leg also needs urgent care.
Are there good orthopaedic surgeons outside New Delhi?
Yes. India has strong orthopaedic care in many cities. If you live in the NCR, our list of orthopaedic surgeons in Noida may save you a longer trip into Delhi or Gurugram. If you are in western India, see our profiles of the best orthopaedic surgeons in Mumbai.
Our recommendation
Start with the doctor whose hospital is easiest for you to reach, since you will need several follow-up visits. Book a consultation, carry your reports and ask your questions. If you are planning a joint replacement, get one more opinion before you decide. Do not pick a surgeon based only on a “best” list, including this one.
FAQs about orthopaedic surgeons in New Delhi
How do I book an appointment with these doctors?
Call the hospital’s appointment desk or use the booking option on the hospital’s website. Third-party doctor-booking apps also list some of them, but confirm the day, time and hospital location with the hospital, since OPD days change.
What should I expect on my first visit?
The surgeon will ask about your pain, past injuries and medical history. They will examine the joint and usually ask for an X-ray or MRI. Carry old reports, scans and a list of your medicines. You will not always be advised surgery on the first day.
Is a second opinion worth it for knee or hip replacement?
Yes, for any planned surgery. A second opinion can confirm the diagnosis, show other treatment options and help you compare the plan and cost.
Will my health insurance cover joint replacement?
It depends on your policy. Some policies have waiting periods for joint replacement and limits on implant costs. Ask the hospital’s insurance desk to check your policy and confirm whether cashless treatment is available.
Why do hospital profiles show different experience figures for the same doctor?
Profiles are written at different times and sometimes count experience in different ways. If a number matters to you, ask the hospital for the doctor’s current details.
Medical disclaimer: this guide is for general information and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Being on this list is not an official ranking or a guarantee of results. Only a qualified doctor who has examined you can advise on your condition. In an emergency, call 112, India’s national emergency number, or go to the nearest hospital.
